New York: Architectural Book Publishing Company, 1930. 1st edition. folio. with a bright jacket that has some tears and chips. 197 pages.  printed inside covers. photographs of courtyards, balustrades, kitchens, windows, roofs, doors and floors, etc. A beautifully designed documentation of a few houses in Mexico. A Compilation  of Mexican Recipes Practicable in the United States. forward by William Spratling. dedicated to Maria Luisa, Scott’s little maid who brightens her Mexican Kitchen. A very fine, unused 1st edition with a rare bright  dust jacket that has a few little edge tears.  $300.

Arthur Gray. THE LITTLE TEA BOOK. NY: Baker & Taylor, 1903. 100 pages. A bright, bright copy with the incredibally scarce woven slipcase-- that is in fragile condition. A collection of tea histories. Text within wide page margins, frontis and tissue guard, title page in red and black. A little vanity on the subject of tea. $175.

Henry D. Thoreau. THE SUCCESSION OF FOREST TREES   WILD APPLE  SOUNDS. Houghton Mifflin Company: Boston, 1887. 3 essays in this stiff covered stapled binding. a little worse for wear. deaccessioned with markings, penciled scribble on the front cover, a few penciled notes. with a biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. A precious little booklet of essays.  $95.

 

 

F.S.  Bodenheimer. INSECTS AS HUMAN FOOD. The Hague: Dr. W. Junk, Publishers, 1951. Anthropological studies throughout the world. Spiders, ants, beetles, grubs, bees, locusts. included is an extensive bibliography. 352 pages a very good clean copy in a well preserved jacket. $225.

 

 

Peter Lund Simmonds.  THE CURIOSITIES OF FOOD; OR THE DAINTIES AND DELICACIES OF DIFFERENT NATIONS OBTAINED FROM THE ANIMAL KINGDOM. London: Richard Bentley, 1859. decorative blind stamped gilt title on spine. 372 pages. a worldwide mid-nineteenth century study of the meats- fish, crustaceans, animals, thick skinned animals, ruminants- domestic and wild, insects, birds, descriptions of the habitats, islands, north and southern hemispheres, hot and cold terrains-   sometimes there is a description of how it is cooked and served. interestingly a scarce title. $450. 

 

Nicolas Appert. L’ARTE DE CONSERVER, PENDANT PLUSIERS ANNEES, TOUTES LES SUBSTANCES ANIMALES ET VEGETALES. Paris: Chez Patris et Cie, 1811. deuxieme edition. c. 1810. Bitting 13- the second edition is not mentioned, but the third and the fourth as well as the British edition of 1811, the German translation of 1811 and 1812 and the Swedish edition of 1811. Wildly famous scientific discoveries, in print, spreading from (professional) kitchen to kitchen.  

225 pages, original grey green paper wraps with the paper title on spine, some worming from the back of the book ending in a small hole to p 71. last leaf has the bottom third removed. 

one folding plate after the second title page. a very nice clean copy, holding very well- no loose pages or cracking in the structure of the book. $1500.

Glasgow: G.Watson, 1862. xlviii + 14 engraved plates + 339 pages + 8 pages of publisher's advertising + 2 inserted recipes one with an address. cracked rear hinge, holding. Yellow end papers. Presumably the first, with an errata sheet. decorative 2 toned title page and decorative frontis. Anglican simplicity avoiding Gallic influence- refinement without extravagance. in the original fine weave, brown cloth binding with gilt stamped title on spine with a thistle motif. 14 pages of engravings. top spine damage with 1 1/2 " chipped away. an owner's signature on FEP appears to be Agnes Gray, 1862. $350.
